If you’ve been around Muncie for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen our quad skate-clad band of misfits handing out flyers, bouting at the fairgrounds, or volunteering in the community. Since 2010, the Cornfed Derby Dames have been a Muncie staple, but this season we may look and sound a little different. In an effort to use more inclusive language, we have voted to change our name to Cornfed Roller Derby, effective immediately. Don’t worry though! We are still the same lovable riff raff we’ve always been. As Shakespeare once said, “A roller derby team by any other name would smell as sweaty,” or something like that.
Striving for Inclusivity
All joking aside, as a team, this change in language is very important to us. Our team skates under the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, which has a very inclusive gender policy that aims to foster anti-discriminatory practices in relation to all transgender women, intersex women, and gender expansive participants. To make all of our skaters, present and future, feel included and welcome, we are choosing to step away from using the gendered Cornfed Derby Dames. After a period of many different suggestions, the team voted on the new name, Cornfed Roller Derby. Simple and to the point, our new name reflects our team a little bit more accurately.
Update
We are currently in the process of updating our online presence to reflect this change, so bear with us as we make some renovations. In addition, we are working with our talented merch committee to create brand new Cornfed Roller Derby merchandise for you to add to your collection. Our merchandise with our original name will be phased out as it is sold, and replaced with merchandise with our new name.
