Our Reasons Why: Debbie Darko

We are thrilled to be back on the track again, and we can’t wait until our New Skater Clinic.

If you are on the fence about joining us, we wanted to share with you why some of us joined derby. So we asked our skaters, both veterans, and new skaters: what made you join, and what is your favorite part of derby?

Our final featured skater before tomorrow’s New Skater Clinic is #28, Debbie Darko.

What made you join roller derby?

After I graduated college, I knew I needed to join something to get out of the house. A lot of my friends had moved away, and it’s really difficult to make friends as an adult. I saw that there was a team forming in Muncie, so I figured it might be a good way to meet people. I hadn’t skated in years, but I thought there was no harm in trying. Over 12 years later, and my teammates past and present are my second family.

What is your favorite part about derby?

There are so many wonderful things I’ve gotten out of joining. I’ve met so many great people from all over. Skating and derby didn’t come naturally to me, but everyone has always been super supportive and encouraging. Seeing myself improve each week, and do things I didn’t think were possible, helped me gain so much confidence. Every person, big or small, no matter your size, has a place in derby. It’s so empowering.

I also love that we give back to the community by volunteering, and by donating a portion of our proceeds to local non-profit organizations. I love the fact that the game is both physically and mentally challenging. A lot of people think we go out there and just beat each other up, but there is so much strategy to the game. To be a good player you have to be smart and think ahead.

Finally, I love seeing new people come in to derby and helping them learn and grow. Knowing how much of a positive impact derby had on me, it’s exciting to see new skaters blossom.
