We are thrilled to be back on the track again, and we can’t wait until our New Skater Clinic.
If you are on the fence about joining us, we wanted to share with you why some of us joined derby. So we asked our skaters, both veterans, and new skaters: what made you join, and what is your favorite part of derby?
Next up is #267, Nesh.
What made you join roller derby?
I had a chronic health issue appear suddenly that affected my muscles and joints. I was afraid to be active and was limited because of pain and fatigue. My symptoms became managed with medication, and I was able to do things again. I was encouraged to exercise regularly by my healthcare team. I decided if I was going to set aside time from family to exercise, I was going to do things that are fun and I will not be able to do in the future. Derby was one of those activities.
What is your favorite part about derby?
The welcoming, supportive, and encouraging attitude of the derby team. I joined something that every aspect is outside my comfort zone including close physical contact, having attention on me, pushing myself while still learning my new limits, and wearing clothing exposing body insecurities to stay cool, easy to move, and comfortable. Because of the environment, I have never felt uncomfortable and feel empowered to push myself but also pay attention to my individual needs.
