The dames have been long-time volunteers at ARF. Pictured are Sonic the Trackhog, Leia Mout, B-Flattened, and Breckin U. Down during one of their shelter visits.

What do roller derby girls and animals have in common? Most would probably answer this question with “vicious claws and totally dominating one another!” Wrong! Well, sort of wrong!

Derby ladies do like hard hits and being dominant, but I find a link between the two more of a heart felt, warm and fuzzy connection. I have come to the realization that a great percentage of roller derby leagues across the nation have given back to animal shelters. Whether it’s by volunteer work or raising funds for the cute little critters during bouts, the skaters seem to really connect with the animals. There are so many reasons for this need, some say this is because they just love animals and others go to a deeper connection like relating to the feeling of not fitting in and feeling a bit misfit-ish! Whatever the reason, it is an amazing thing to see this partnership between the two. One animal rescue in particular has pulled at the heart strings of the Cornfed Derby Dames, the Animal Rescue Fund better known as ARF. Their mission is simple, but oh so amazing!

“Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) is to provide shelter, medical care, and love to abused, abandoned, neglected, and unwanted animals until permanent homes can be found. Through educational efforts, public awareness, and community involvement, ARF seeks to relieve animal suffering; to prevent cruelty, abuse, neglect and overpopulation; to eliminate euthanasia as a way of animal control, thereby creating a “no-kill” community in which both animals and humans benefit from the goodness of each other.”

Teaming up with ARF for season 5, CFDD will donate a portion of all home bout proceeds to the shelter. This partnership will provide lots of help for these cute little animals. If you would like to help our furry friends at ARF, please feel free to visit their website or just stop by and give the fur babies some love, because we all know that sometimes our animals are the only ones that can truly understand us!
